5 Human Foods That Are Safe for Cats
Does your cat coil around your leg while you sit munching on a scrumptious snack? It slowly meows and asks for a tidbit of your meal – you say no with a twinge of guilt. Well, that’s perfectly okay! You probably did the right thing. Few human foods can be dangerous for your kitty. But having said that, some are safe. Here’s a list of human foods that you can share with your feline friend.
1. Fish and fish oil
Cats are fish lovers, and the omega-3 content in fish enriches their health. It gives your cat sharp eyesight, equipping it for better hunting. The fatty acid in the fish also prevents arthritis and heart problems. Cooked or canned fish, such as tuna, is a healthy and tasty treat for your cat, while raw fish can be detrimental to their health.
2. Meat
Meat is high in protein, and protein is a healthy nutrient as it provides good vision and an excellent reproductive system when fed to your cat. But remember to give them only cooked meat as raw or spoilt meat can lead to a bad stomach. Cats quickly digest bits of beef, chicken, and turkey.
3. Vegetables
Felines are not big fans of vegetables, but you can develop this good habit by making them eat veggies from a young age. Vegetables are loaded with fiber and vitamins that help your kitty with digestion. Vegetables with high water content are a preferred food for your kitty. Feed them asparagus, spinach, broccoli, and cucumber. But avoid spicy vegetables, such as onions and garlic, as they can harm the cat. A diet containing just vegetables isn’t advisable either and, hence, it’s essential to give equal proportions of cat and human food.
4. Whole grain
Cats prefer small grains, such as millet and couscous. They might also enjoy oats and corn when ground well. The high protein content per calorie in whole grain is suitable for your cat’s health. You can always give your cats what you might eat and avoid anything you might not. For instance, uncooked whole grain is something you might not prefer. Similarly, your cat might not digest it well.
5. Fruits
Felines don’t have a great appetite for fruits. But few fruits, such as apples, bananas, and berries, can be good for their tummy. Apple has rich fiber content, and when fed to your cat without the skin, it can aid the digestion process. Vitamins A and C can be found in many cat food and blueberries as well, which are a yummy treat for your cat. Bananas are one way to put potassium into your cat’s diet but make sure these fruits make up only 30 percent of your cat’s intake and not more.
