4 Effective Treatment Options for DVT

4 Effective Treatment Options for DVT

When blood moves slowly through the veins in the body, it causes clumps of the blood cells that are referred to as clots. When such a clot occurs deep inside the body, it is medically referred to as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). While DVT can occur anywhere in the body, it is quite common in the region of the pelvis, thighs, and lower leg.

Paying a visit to the doctor is inevitable, as DVT can lead to other major health problems.

What can one expect from a DVT treatment, and what are the treatment options?
The treatment could prevent the clot from growing further or clotting further. It can also lower the risk of inflammation of the foot and reduce pain in the legs. Furthermore, and it prevents future blood clots from getting formed.

1. Anticoagulants
Also known as blood thinners, this is one of the common treatment options for DVT. They are largely responsible for preventing the formation of new clots and preventing the existing clots from growing further. Although they are known as blood thinners, they do not thin the blood but get rid of the existing clot. Some of them include Heparin, Warfarin, Rivaroxaban, and Edoxaban.

Doctors usually prescribe such medicines for 7-10 days, but that largely depends on the age, gender, and other co-morbid conditions.

2. Clot busters
The medical term for this is thrombolytics, and they are usually prescribed when the person has a serious type of DVT and where other forms of medications are not working. The drug is administered through a catheter or IV and is placed directly on the clot. They cause severe bleeding, which could also be painful, which is the sole reason it is used only in acute cases.

3. Compression stockings
These stockings are knee-length and reduce the chances of blood clots. This is indeed a slow process as the person has to wear them for a minimum period of two years and that too it has to be worn properly. Moreover, it needs to be worn all day.

4. Inferior vena cava filter (IVC)
This is a medical procedure that is considered when blood thinners are no longer a viable option. An IVC filter is a metal device that looks like an umbrella but upside down and stops blood clots in the vein from moving. It is called inferior vena cava since it passes through the body’s main and primary vein, called the inferior vena cava, which sends blood right from the lower hand of the body back to the heart. By using this filter, it prevents the clots from breaking loose and dodging their way to your lungs.

In addition to the above-mentioned treatment options, it is important that the person visits the doctor often, takes medications on time, and sticks to a low-sodium diet. Habits such as smoking and binge-eating could only make the situation worse.
